July 28 - High Point Shelter to Doug Witter's House - 22.0 miles
Had a new change of terrain today- Boardwalks (log bogs). The New Jersey section is pretty famous for their boardwalks. In fact, there is a stretch of almost 1 mile of continuous wood bridges.
Hiking 2,200 miles can be daunting and difficult to wrap your mind around. The key with almost any long endeavor is to set small goals and concentrate just on that particular task. Each day I try to find something to focus my energy on so that I do not get discouraged. Today I focused on Doug.
Doug is a co-worker of mine, someone I got to know when I use to work at Trane last summer. I would provide IT support over the phone for Trane employees throughout the nation.
Doug took us in, opened up his home to us and made us feel like we were family. Doug and his wonderful wife (who is a marathoner!) prepared a feast for three hungry hikers, consisting of cheeseburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, corn on the cob and seven different choices of ice cream for dessert... We were in heaven.
Though we were a little weary from hiking up the mountain to Doug's house, we still found enough energy to play Xbox Connect with their three daughters. They also let me play with their pillow pets and bombarded us with laughter and joy. Upon leaving they gifted us their favorite silly bands. We're taking those silly bands to Katahdin.
Hey there Travis, we've been tracking you guys ever since you left. The girls would not stop talking about you three, they kept wanting to know where you were if if you were ok. We enjoyed having you guys and sharing your stories, X-box was fun but I think watching you guys eat was amazing! I know you had a few good storms after you left here and we talked about you guys having to be out in the weather. The girls are fighting over the canoe silly band! THANKS!!! You guys be good and congrats on doing something so great, you will never forget it and always have the awesome memories. Thanks for taking time to spend with us on your trip. Be good.
